Marcus is not here this week to do the News Roundup, so I though I’d share some holiday related posts from other blogs to add to our Christmas themed Dumbest Product of the Week and Christmas Tree hauling by bike.
PacificPedalling.com has a article about a pilot program UPS is doing right now to deliver packages by mountain bikes with trailers. Hmmm, sounds like they need to discover Bakfiets or Xtracycle, but what a step in the right direction, eh? They also did this great video to supplement the story.

With a Christmas day forecast in the mid 70s, it’s not much of a winter wonderland in Austin. This has not been the case for most of the rest of the country however. BikeHugger has been doing a series of stories on dealing with winter weather including making your own studded snow tires and this video of a guy plowing snow with his bike.
Finally, something news related but not holiday related, Ecovelo reported on a story on in the Los Angeles Times about how the LAPD has suddenly started enforcing a little know part of the city code requiring all cyclists to register all their bikes with the city. The ticket for not completing the $3 registration? $160. Why you could almost get a carbon fiber seat post rack for that! Apparently, the police have no idea how to provide the forms to be in compliance but see no problem in arbitrary enforcement. Does someone get a toaster oven if they make quota on this each month? My favorite quote about the policy was how it is designed to “ultimately to prevent bikes in our car-obsessed city.” Kind of reminds me of another city who recently decided to crack down on cyclists.
