Transportation cycling goes velo couture

In the last year, transportation cycling has not only become an increasingly popular way for people to get from point A to B, it has also been embraced by part of the fashion industry with the growing velo couture segment.

At Interbike this year, utility cycling took the show by storm and Momentum magazine held a fashion show promoting stylish cycling attire. I had been searching for this video of the show for a while and found it at Cory Field’s blog via Girl meets bike.

Also, recently the blog Urban Cycling Chic reported on this velo themed fashion called Cycle Chic held in Cork, Ireland in early November.

So has cycling become cool and hip? Our spandex wearing brethren are constantly on the razors edge between sexy and dorky. Unfortunately, with performance gear your choice of jersey and fitness level often determine which side you fall on. Velo couture is a bit more egalitarian with most able to pull off some fashion sense. You can take your pick from classic preppy to punk to pixie. They all seem to work.

The thing I like the best about the cycling chic I see is how practical all of it is. No Hightide Heels here. This appeals to my minimalist sensibilities and is a welcoming change of pace.

So, ride to work or on the cat walk. Either way you get there in style.
